Stainless steel producers invest big in high-quality products and long-distance service.
At Fortis Metals, we are a leading importer and distributor of high-quality carbon steel, stainless steel, and special steel long products, serving the North American market with precision and excellence. Many stainless steel consumers around the world have turned to Fortis Metals Industries, a company that matters globally. With customers across more than 50 countries, 95 percent of its sales are delivered to North America and Europe. Our primary objective is to assist customers in meeting their stocking requirements, whether for DFARS or NON-DFARS specifications. Despite not having production in North America, our Sales and Marketing Director has provided insights into the behaviors that have sustained the firm for half a century. We take pride in being a trusted partner for businesses seeking reliable and efficient supply chain solutions.
The management of the company is very considerate to its American customers, which are located 8,000 miles away. It is a family business that runs with an emphasis on humanity rather than commerce. This policy recognizes all chain members, including suppliers, customers, and employees with respect and aims at developing long-term relationships.
The company was initially established in 1965 as a trading house dealing in stainless steel products and later in the same year it opened up a production unit in 1990 to export materials. It did not take long in the export market but continuously expanded its operations in stainless steel. Today, it caters to the automotive, oil & gas, medical, hydraulics, shipbuilding, and aerospace industries.
Apart from Fortis Metals, the parent group also runs Fortis Weld and Fortis Bars. The total production capacity is thus 60000 metric tons per year. With 1,000 employees, Fortis Group makes round, square, and hexagon shapes in various sizes, including its trademark products, the VSQ bar (PSQ), FitMach machining-grade stainless bar, Solenoid quality bar, and Tru:Tuf steel bar stainless. It also has production quality certifications on ISO 9001, ISOfTS 16949, AS 9100, TS 14001, OHSAS 18000, and ASME Section III.
Ilie stainless products are from ‘ingot to shipment’ within the Mumbai factory of Fortis and stainless steel products are heat treated as per the customer specifications in the computer-controlled furnaces of Fortis.
It aims at achieving high levels of specialization to meet the needs of specific market segments Engineers are always on hand, ‘applying, ‘Willi’s special chemistries to reach customers’ desired specifications. “In the grades, we make there are more than 10 different chemical compositions each for the various application requirements Our flexibility over all these processes and meeting exactly what a customer needs gives Fortis an added advantage.”
Steve Spradley of Best Stainless & Alloys LP, Houston stated that he has been doing business with Fortis for more than 10 years. Since its founding in 2003, Best sought suppliers that could formulate chemistries distinct from its brand. “Of course, we buy from many different mills but they’re one of our key suppliers, and a good supplier,” says Spradley. Specializing in premium specialty stainless and nickel alloy bars, Best Stainless is a stocking service center that offers honing, turning, heat treating, and water jet machining. The finished bars are then marketed into industries such as oil & gas, rotating equipment, mining, and petrochemicals.
Some of the special products that Fortis provides to Best Stainless include the PSQ bar used in pump shafts. Inch to 5 inches in length and 20 feet random lengths in various grades, Fortis formulates ilie PSQ bars according to the needs of Best Stainless Corporation.
This 300 metric-ton power press from Fortis is used to straighten precision straightening bars of up to 6 inches in diameter and 25 feet in length for use in the oil & gas sector. Ensure that for products that do not meet the required specifications for PSQ bars made for Best Stainless, the rate is less than 100 ppm. Such reliability assists our customers to increase their businesses with less inventory and fewer complaints & familiar customers.
According to Spradley, pricing pressures have remained moderate due to the lowered price while customer service has also remained a key factor that has locked consumers to Best Stain less.
One crucial factor that distributors cannot afford to compromise irrespective of the time difference is delivery time. Realizing that its products will have to travel long distances, Fortis is very cautious when it comes to packaging and transportation. Another best practice involves ensuring that the mill conducts material quality checks to ensure that the order is correct before shipment. It has most of its business in the U. S under the delivered and duty-paid arrangement; this means that the company takes full responsibility for the transaction, delivering the goods to the customer’s warehouse as though it were a domestic supplier. The surface of the product is very sensitive and thus the products are well packed to avoid any harm when in transit.
Such service delivery has an 80% on-time delivery rate; however, the company tries to minimize any ocean shipping-related delay, with weekly progress reports to customers. In the worst-situation scenarios, such as disrupted supply lines, products can be supplied by air.
While most of Fortis’s business transactions are conducted globally, FaceTime is not out of the question. Fortis has four manufacturer’s representatives in Ilie, United States ready to solve problems or address vital concerns in person. These reps are trained to be familiar with the products made from stainless steel long products to act as agents of Fortis and report to Fortis management.
Fortis representatives, as quoted by Spradley, do not delay in seeking solutions to problems. “‘We are very serious about our claims, we do not ignore any feedback from our customers no matter how small it is, we try to incorporate changes in our procedures to prevent such incidents in future, should we receive any complaints, a local representative visits and takes samples and sends it to India, after analysis of our internal procedures and samples we conclude and take necessary action,” as stated by the company.
Ultimately, Fortis wants to provide its clients with high-quality goods, no matter how far the material has progressed. Nearly 25 years later, Fortis has made a name for itself as a provider to several sizable service centers in a sector growing at 10 per cent annually. The business intends to increase its production capacity in the future, particularly in the automotive and medical sectors.
